After manager Craig Brown presided over the team which equalled the Scots best ever U-21's tournament finish, reaching the Semi-Finals of the 1992 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the young Scots lost the opening match of qualification for the following tournament, going down against the Swiss in a 2-0 away defeat. Making the grade for 1994 was always going to be an uphill battle for Scotland, having drawn the group of death which contained eventual tournament champions, Italy, and runners-up, Portugal, and Brown's side could not overturn the odds, being eliminated after a 4th place finish
